Mitochondria in the service of beauty – thanks to new cosmetics

The ageing process can be successfully delayed by affecting the mitochondria, the energy centres of cells. Results of long-term research on mitochondria bioenergetics will be applied in producing cosmetics of the new generation. We are likely to find them on the shelves in a few years from now, thanks to a joint undertaking of the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw and Dr Irena Eris Cosmetic Laboratory.

The Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology in Warsaw joins forces with Dr Irena Eris Cosmetic Laboratory S.A. to develop innovative cosmetics under a research-industry consortium. These new cosmetic products will be generated by applying the results of research on mitochondria bioenergetics and biochemistry. Two Nencki Institute research teams are involved in this undertaking. They are headed by Professor Jerzy Duszyński and Professor Adam Szewczyk and count among world leaders in mitochondria bioenergetics and biochemistry research.

“We hope to combine the research results of Nencki scientific groups and the experience of Dr Irena Eris Cosmetic Laboratory to develop in a few years innovative and really effective cosmetics with scientifically proven effects”, says Prof. Adam Szewczyk, Director of the Nencki Institute.

Mitochondria, the energy centres of cells, are of key importance for their life and death. These small organelles – of a few micrometres in length – are located in eukaryotic cells (cell with a nucleus). Their number in each cell varies from a few hundred to a few thousand. Mitochondria are responsible for important life functions; among other they produce the adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a chemical compound which is the main carrier of chemical energy within cells. It is of crucial importance as each day humans convert ATP in the amount comparable to the weight of the entire body.

For research on new cosmetics it is important that the mitochondria also play a vital role in apoptosis, which is the programmed cell death. Inhibition of apoptosis, using compounds specifically affecting the mitochondria, may to a significant degree contribute to prolonging cells’ youth along with the tissue formed from the cells, for example the skin.

The research goal of the project executed by the research-industry consortium between the Nencki Institute and Dr Irena Eris Cosmetic Laboratory is to identify and evaluate compounds, whose interaction with the mitochondria favourably impacts skin cells and slows down damage caused by the oxidative stress. The commercial goal of the project is to introduce to the market innovative dermoprotective cosmetics, which will be able to significantly delay skin ageing and minimise the unfavourable impact of external factors.

To carry out this project, the consortium has just obtained funding under the Applied Research Program executed by the National Centre for Research and Development. Out of 1140 applications submitted to the call for proposals, this project has been awarded the highest number of points and ranked first in the “Biological, agricultural, forest and veterinary research” – and third overall.

Dr Irena Eris Cosmetic Laboratory is one of the leading cosmetic firms in Central Europe. It is the only cosmetics manufacturer in Poland and one of the few worldwide to have its own Scientific Research Centre where advanced research is conducted using in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo methods. Therefore the Centre is able to apply innovative active ingredients in optimum concentration and synergic complexes in its cosmetic products.

“The Centre cooperates with various research institutions in Poland and worldwide. Research results are presented on international conferences and published in scientific journals, including major scientific periodicals included in the Institute for Scientific Information Master Journal List. The Centre has filed numerous patent applications”, say Dr Irena Eris, founder of the Cosmetic Laboratory where she serves as Director of Research and Development.

The new generation of cosmetic products developed by drawing on the results of basic mitochondria research should be found on the shelves most likely in a few years.

Dr Irena Eris Cosmetic Laboratory is one of the largest manufacturers of skin care products in Europe and has been on the market for almost 30 years. It offers a wide range of cosmetic products in various market segments: the exclusive brand (Dr Irena Eris, selective professional cosmetics – Prostystem Home Care), budget cosmetics (Lirene and Under Twenty) and pharmaceutical dermocosmetics (Pharmaceris). Cosmetic products from Dr Irena Eris Cosmetic Laboratory are sold in more than 28 countries in the world. Dr Irena Eris Group currently has 800 employees and manufactures over 20 million individual products per year. The brand of Dr Irena Eris is one of the most valuable and better recognized on the Polish market.

The Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences has been established in 1918 and is the largest non-university centre for biological research in Poland. Priority fields for the Institute include neurobiology, neurophysiology, biology, cellular biochemistry and molecular biology at the level of complexity from tissue organisms through cellular organelles to proteins and genes. There are 31 labs in the Institute, among them modern Laboratory of Confocal Microscopy, Laboratory of Cytometry, Laboratory of Electron Microscopy, Behavioural and Elecrophysiological Tests. The Institute is equipped with up to date research equipment and modernized animal house, where lab animals are bred, also transgenic animals, in accordance with the highest standards. Quality of experiments, publications and close ties with the international science community, place the Institute among leading biological research institutions in Europe.
